Milk is not an essential part of my diet although as a child I did have many a warm cup of hot cocoa with sugar and whole milk too. Now, I mostly cook with milk, substituting for cream in quiche fillings, using it in potato purees and such. My husband often treats it as emergency sustenance, having it with cereal when there's no dinner ready. One can imagine that our milk lasts longer than it would in other lactose loving families and so we can afford to spend a pretty penny on the quest for better tasting milk. After a long time of alternating between the Trader Joe’s brand milk and the Horizon farms milk I decided to give a new brand a try. The milk I bought about two months ago at the Valencia Whole Foods had more a pronounced effect on my husband who is now an enthusiastic convert. The milk I chose came in an old school glass bottle from Broguirere's Fresh Farm Dairy in Montebello CA. Yes, it was that quaint. When I found out that Whole Foods refunds the bottle deposit dollary dues every time I return the rinsed bottle to the customer service counter, I was hooked and now don't mind the extra work of planning ahead to purchase milk. Besides, handling the bottles does provide some geeky comic relief if I pay attention to the stamping on the bottles. So far I have rinsed bottles that celebrated the 4th of July in September, ones that displayed Huell Howser toasting with a bottle of milk, and last Saturday I met a facetious bottle that declared this milk is "Made in the USA from American cows". Or maybe it was a proud glass bottle, who knows.
